The Watford Academy:

Despite Watford’s position in the premier league table, the youth academy is doing the best they can to offer the necessities expected by FA association. With 2 hours of provisioned football a day, with suitable conditioning, as well as a range of A-levels/Btec’s to choose from, Watford have considered everything and pulled out the stops for a young player. All coaches are past scholars that have been with the club just to show that people have made the grade in this academy.

Watford provide a competitive standard of football coupled with a free course in Level 3 BTEC Sport. As well as this, if things don’t go well for the players and they are unable to progress in their sporting career, they are trained in coaching and given they complete the course will have FA Coaching badges, safeguarding practice and knowledge of emergency aid. This means that Watford care about the individual, not necessarily just the graduates among the squad.

Watford’s current owner is Gino Pozzo, part of the Pozzo family. His father, Giampaolo Pozzo is the owner of Italian club “Udinese”. Now that would be an interesting game to watch!

Watford Academy Staff:

Watford seemed to have cracked the recipe for success as they have won six of their last 8 games, with Under-18’s coach Paul Hardyman at the front of it. After taking a different approach to the young squad, Hardyman has found it ‘easy’ coach the side. After impressing Hardyman, two of the players have signed professional contracts at the club already this season which is a testament to the coaching staff and of course, the player.
Chris McGuane, Watford’s head of academy has done a lot with the squad he was given, having carried Watford to victory in the Global Arena Cup and not a bad return in the league either, he has managed to keep up with bigger clubs with much more impressive budgets. a quote from the Under-18’s boss said “The number one priority is to produce players that go and play in our first-team and have a long career”. We also believe that it is important to plan for the players future give the young players at our academy realistic targets.

How to get noticed by a scout

Generally, premier league clubs are closely following open trials as a way of pinpointing the newest talent, as well as having a vast network of scouts across the UK. Scouts are often preferential over structured leagues or with players of a high standard, playing together. This is one thing that FootieBugs academy can offer through our weekly training sessions and games against local teams managed by professional coaches. Because we cover a range of age groups at U6’s-U14’s we have a high demand for young upcoming talent and receive frequent scouts visiting from our partners Birmingham City. Due the coaches we have available at our hand that have all played at professional level we can easily distinguish which players are leagues above in terms of skill and can refer them onto Premier League clubs.

“If you’re good enough, generally they’ll find you.”

Watford Academy Scouting System:

After a scout has seen a player, they will usually contact them and invite them to a trial day, otherwise the more common method of finding talents from all over are through football trial days and football camps. FootieBugs goes the extra mile in making your job easier as a parent and a young footballer. With our focused training sessions, the FootieBugs Academy will try it’s best to match your ability with a club who will nurture your talent . We will shape a football player into a footballer, by working on improving the child’s overall game and their image to scouts at Premier League Clubs.

This is where the FootieBugs Academy thrives, not only will FootieBugs look to put players forward to Watford when they feel they are ready, but FootieBugs will also ensure that Watford will be fully aware of what training each player will have received from the FootieBugs Academy and why the player has shown enough (Footballing skill as well as dedication and attitude) to be worthy of a trial.
