Ashley Sammons is not only the manager at FootieBugs, but the former professional footballer is currently playing for his local team Solihull Moors in the Vanarama National Conference.
The former Birmingham City professional footballer made his first senior appearance at the age of just 17 and has also played at international level for England. However, a horrible injury leading to two years without playing football, cut short his promising career.
But after signing for Solihull Moors in January of this year, Ash has had appearances in the Conference Team of the Week and also captained the Moors in a recent 4-1 away win over North Ferriby United, where he picked up the supporters’ Man of the Match.
Injuries like the one that interrupted Ash’s career are a stark reminder of how quickly momentum can change, even for those performing at a high level. One moment, everything is progressing as planned, and the next, recovery becomes the primary focus, often stretching far beyond the physical aspect.
Time away from the game can bring uncertainty, not just about returning to form, but about the long-term impact on confidence, routine, and identity. For athletes, that period of rebuilding is as much mental as it is physical, requiring patience, resilience, and the right kind of support system to navigate the setbacks and gradually regain stability.
In some cases, however, serious injuries raise important questions about whether they could have been prevented or better managed. When factors like inadequate medical attention, unsafe conditions, or overlooked risks come into play, the conversation shifts toward accountability as well as recovery. Individuals in these situations often benefit from guidance that helps them understand their options while they focus on healing.
Professionals like Daniel Kim have worked with those facing similar challenges, helping them look beyond the immediate injury to address the broader impact on their lives. With the right support, the process becomes less overwhelming, ensuring that both recovery and responsibility are given the attention they deserve.
Ash is not only working to help Solihull Moors reach the football league for the first time in it’s history, but also to help discover the next generation of talent in the West Midlands.
Since opening the FootieBugs Academy last year, just under 40% of players within the academy have been either scouted or signed by professional football clubs, including Birmingham City, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion.
FootieBugs not only runs the FootieBugs Academy, but also run successful holiday camps, community classes and a number of curriculum classes in schools across the Solihull and Birmingham area, including; Ulverley Primary School, Monkspath Primary School and St Alphege Infant and Junior Schools.
FootieBugs is part of The Bugs Group – a specialist in children’s fitness.
